Terms of Service

Welcome to SHELVD. These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the SHELVD application and services. By using SHELVD, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use our services.

1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using SHELVD, you agree to be bound by these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you are using SHELVD on behalf of an organization, you represent that you have authority to bind that organization to these Terms.

2. Description of Service

SHELVD is a reading tracking application that allows you to:

  • Track your reading progress across physical books, e-books, and Kindle devices
  • Organize your library with custom shelves
  • View reading statistics, streaks, and activity visualizations
  • Sync your Kindle reading progress automatically (Founders plan)
  • Scan bookshelves to import books to your library
  • Participate in book clubs with other readers

3. Account Registration

To use SHELVD, you must create an account. You agree to:

  • Provide accurate and complete information during registration
  • Maintain the security of your account credentials
  • Notify us immediately of any unauthorized access to your account
  • Be responsible for all activities that occur under your account

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account and use SHELVD.

4. Subscription and Billing

SHELVD offers both free and paid subscription tiers. For paid subscriptions:

  • Payment is processed securely through our payment provider (Stripe)
  • Subscriptions automatically renew unless cancelled before the renewal date
  • You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings
  • If you cancel, you retain access to paid features through the end of your current billing period
  • Subscription fees are non-refundable, including in cases where third-party integrations (such as Kindle Sync) become temporarily or permanently unavailable, require repeated re-authentication, or otherwise stop working as expected. Unredeemed gift codes may be refunded within 30 days as described on the gift page.

5. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use SHELVD for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or other users' accounts
  • Interfere with or disrupt the service or servers
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the application
  • Use automated systems to access the service without our permission
  • Share your account credentials with others
  • Upload malicious content or attempt to exploit vulnerabilities

6. Third-Party Services

SHELVD relies on integrations with third-party services that we do not own or control, including Amazon Kindle, Goodreads, and others. These integrations are provided as a convenience and may change, degrade, or stop working at any time. We make our best effort to keep them running but do not guarantee their continued availability, accuracy, or timeliness, and we are not liable for issues that arise from changes to those services.

Amazon Kindle Integration

Kindle Sync is available exclusively on the Founders plan. Kindle Sync is an unofficial integration: Amazon does not publish a public API for reading progress, so SHELVD uses the same session-based interfaces that Amazon's own Kindle apps and website use. If you are on the Founders plan and you connect your Amazon Kindle account to SHELVD:

  • You authorize us to access your Kindle reading progress and library
  • You are responsible for complying with Amazon's Terms of Service
  • We are not responsible for any issues arising from your use of Amazon services
  • You may disconnect your Kindle account at any time
  • Kindle Sync may stop working at any time if Amazon changes, blocks, or removes the interfaces we depend on. We do not guarantee that Kindle Sync will remain continuously available, accurate, or complete.
  • Periodic re-authentication is required. Amazon sessions expire on their own schedule, and security or account changes on Amazon's side can also invalidate a session. When this happens, Kindle Sync pauses until you reconnect your Amazon account in Settings > Credentials.
  • No refunds will be issued if Kindle Sync becomes unavailable, unreliable, or requires repeated re-authentication. The Founders plan price reflects this best-effort nature.

Goodreads Import & Push Sync

If you import data from Goodreads, you are responsible for ensuring you have the right to export and use that data. Goodreads Push Sync (Pro and above) similarly depends on Goodreads-controlled interfaces and may stop working without notice. The same best-effort and no-refund terms described above apply.

7. Intellectual Property

SHELVD and its original content, features, and functionality are owned by SHELVD and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other intellectual property laws.

You retain ownership of any content you create within SHELVD, such as notes, custom shelves, and reading lists. By using SHELVD, you grant us a license to use this content solely to provide and improve our services.

8. User Content

You are responsible for any content you submit to SHELVD. You agree that your content will not:

  • Violate any applicable laws or regulations
  • Infringe on the rights of others
  • Contain harmful, offensive, or inappropriate material

We reserve the right to remove content that violates these Terms.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

SHELVD is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We do not guarantee that:

  • The service will be uninterrupted or error-free
  • The service will meet your specific requirements
  • Data synchronization will always be accurate or timely
  • Third-party integrations (including but not limited to Kindle Sync, Goodreads Push Sync, and imports from external services) will remain available, work reliably, or continue to function in the future

We will use commercially reasonable best efforts to keep SHELVD and its integrations running, but features that depend on third-party services may stop working at any time and without notice.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, SHELVD shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, including but not limited to:

  • Loss of data or reading history
  • Loss of profits or revenue
  • Interruption of service
  • Any damages arising from your use of third-party services

Our total liability shall not exceed the amount you paid to us in the 12 months preceding the claim.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless SHELVD and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the service or violation of these Terms.

12. Termination

We may terminate or suspend your account at any time for violation of these Terms. Upon termination:

  • Your right to use SHELVD will cease immediately
  • You may request an export of your data before termination takes effect
  • We may delete your data in accordance with our data retention policy

You may delete your account at any time through your account settings.

13. Changes to Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new Terms on this page and updating the effective date. Your continued use of SHELVD after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the new Terms.

14. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the United States, without regard to conflict of law principles.

15. Dispute Resolution

Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of SHELVD will first be attempted to be resolved through good-faith negotiation. If negotiation fails, disputes will be resolved through binding arbitration in accordance with the rules of the American Arbitration Association.

16. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue in full force and effect.
